Past performance does not predict the future
Every historical result on this site is by definition a backtest. Markets that went up in the past can go down. The S&P 500 returned roughly 10 percent annually over its full history, but it has also delivered multi-year drawdowns of 30 to 50 percent. Bitcoin has periodically lost 80 percent of its value. Gold has gone sideways for a decade at a time. Future returns can and will differ — sometimes dramatically.
Modeled simplifications
For methodology transparency we should be explicit about what the simulation does not include:
- No transaction fees, commissions, or bid-ask spreads.
- No taxes on dividends, capital gains, or distributions.
- No currency conversion costs for non-USD investors.
- No bid-ask slippage on illiquid days (especially relevant for crypto).
- No tracking-error modeling for ETF-backed series (Gold, MSCI World) versus the underlying index.
Real-world DCA returns will be lower than the figures shown here, sometimes by a meaningful margin over multi-decade horizons.
Cryptocurrency risk
Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are highly volatile and largely unregulated asset classes. Past returns are not indicative of future returns. There is real risk of total loss. Many jurisdictions have specific tax treatment for crypto that this site does not model. Treat the Bitcoin calculator as illustrative only.
